West Ham chief David Gold hails Sunderland "survivor" Sam Allardyce
And gets in maybe half a dozen candidates for Best Backhanded Compliment of the Year while he's at it.

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/west-ham-chief-david-gold-hails-sunderland-survivor-sam-allardyce-34709158.html

"It doesn't surprise me, he is the great survivor, and he's old, which gives him something which young people don't have, and that's experience," Gold, 79, told Press Association Sport.

"He's had vast experience as a player, and as a manager, in difficult circumstances. He's never really managed a 'glamour' club - maybe with the exception of West Ham, of course - but he is a survivor.

"When he went to Sunderland, I immediately said, 'He will keep them up'. And it was doubtful: it was in the balance for months. But when it mattered, Sam delivered.

"Experience pays off more, and is more valuable in a 'doubt' situation, where you need level heads; patience. You don't need that at a big club: you need to be adventurous, you need to be innovative.

"Sam fits that category (of a doubt situation). He would probably argue that he could also do it for a big club, but certainly his track record says that that's what he does best."

Not exactly an achievement is it? Narrowly saving Sunderland from relegation? Advocaat, Di Canio, Poyet, O'Neill all did it and were rewarded ..... with the sack!

It was probably said with sincerity but the only reason Sam will be angry with it is because it's true.

When BFS managed Bolton he took them into the PL and over the next six years up to his resignation he averaged 50 points a season, twice finished with a positive goal difference and twice took Bolton into Europe. That is a record that stands comparison with any English PL manager.

BFS has not subsequently reached that level since those Bolton days and he showed no sign of moving us consistently above mid table. My feeling is that Sunderland will be more competitive under him but they will not regularly inhabit the top half of the PL by season's end.

Lots of back-handed compliments there - could've slipped in 'he doesn't sweat that much for someone who's morbidly obese'
